Up at 5.30. Sunny but blowing and it continued to blow all day.

In the afternoon, however, we took the horses out for a while. In less than a week we shall have the midnight sun with us—on the 27th—and then begins our summer of better weather for 4 months.

Both the motors are now out on the sea ice with all the sledges packed ready for a start. The broken axle case of the one has been very satisfactorily patched up with steel bolts.

Today I spent in getting various things done writing report on the winters’ work, finishing off my sledge gear, issuing medical cases for the sledge parties and so on. All goes well with our preparations except for the geological Western Party who are unfortunate ; for Debenhams’ knee is as stiff as can be and he can’t walk on it at all at present, and Fordes’ frost bitten fingers have not yet healed up quite, though they are doing very well.
