Slept sound all night on top of the ice-house in a greatcoat and Jaeger sleeping bag. Tried the bag alone, but the wind came through too cold. Gran calls me 4 to 4.30 with some good cocoa which I have with Campbell on the bridge every morning ; he taking the morning watch, having Gran as midshipman of the watch, from 4 a.m. to 8.
Gran is a delightful young Norwegian giant, a great expert at ski running and jumping. Speaks very good English and is the most obliging soul on earth, most good-natured, and enormously strong, but a trifle slow with it except when he gets excited. He is from Christiania University and sublieutenant in the Norwegian Royal Navy, where they have a funny combination of both services, and as there are few men-of-war the Royal Navy cadets have to do all their sea-time in merchant service ships.
Gran is 21 years old and is wealthy for Norway; has a mother and sisters and is building a very strong wooden
ship at his home for further exploring work in the Antarctic when he returns from this expedition. For his ski jumping he says he has been offered £800 by German hotel-keepers in certain places if he will go and jump as an attraction for a few months in the winter; but the Norwegians are as yet so far jealous of their simplicity that they refuse professional offers of this kind. Every Norwegian is an expert on ski, but very few jump or even try to. Saw a shearwater some way off.
